First class on Udarata Menike (1043) and Intercity Express (1041) offers air‑conditioned compartments or observation saloons with large windows – perfect for enjoying the hill country views without the cold. However, windows are sealed. Book at least 3‑4 weeks in advance – these sell out within hours.
Second class is available on all trains. Reserved 2nd class on Podi Menike, Udarata Menike and Express (1005) gives you open windows for unobstructed photography. You can sit by the doorway and feel the cool mountain breeze. This is the most popular choice among tourists. Unreserved 2nd class can be crowded – always reserve.
Third class is available on most trains but is unreserved with wooden benches. Carriages are often overcrowded, and you may have to stand for the entire 2‑3 hour journey. Avoid 3rd class unless you are an extreme budget traveler.
For the best daylight scenery, take the Udarata Menike (08:10) or the Intercity Express (12:13). Both offer reserved 1st and 2nd class. From the right side, you will catch spectacular views of St. Clair’s and Devon waterfalls, endless tea estates, the famous Demodara Loop, and finally the Nine Arches Bridge just before Ella.
Reserved Tickets – Guaranteed Seating (ESSENTIAL): Reserved tickets provide a guaranteed seat for this 2‑3 hour journey. Always choose reserved for 1st or 2nd class – unreserved tickets mean you may stand for hours.
Unreserved Tickets – Not recommended: Unreserved tickets (3rd class) mean you may have to stand or sit on a wooden bench. Only suitable for extreme budget travel.
