First class on the Main Line offers air-conditioned comfort or observation compartments with large windows, perfect for taking in the lush scenery. Trains like the Intercity Express (1010) provide this premium experience. Enjoy a reserved seat, no crowding, and a stress‑free environment. We strongly recommend booking First Class reserved tickets at least 1 week in advance – they sell out quickly, especially during peak season (December–April).
Second class is the best value for money on this route. You get a guaranteed reserved seat, open windows for photography, and comfortable bench seating. All express and intercity trains on this route offer 2nd class. Book your 2nd class reserved ticket online at least 3‑5 days ahead for a hassle-free journey.
Third class is the cheapest option, but it comes with serious drawbacks. These carriages are often overcrowded, especially on weekends, with wooden benches and no reservations. You may have to stand for the entire 2‑hour journey. We strongly advise tourists to avoid 3rd class altogether. The small saving is not worth the discomfort.
To ensure a seamless Kandy to Gampaha train journey, it is highly recommended to purchase your tickets in advance, especially for First and Second Class. By booking online upfront, you can secure your preferred seats and enjoy a hassle-free experience. For Third Class, we recommend not using it at all.
Reserved Tickets – Guaranteed Seating (RECOMMENDED): Reserved tickets provide the advantage of guaranteed seating throughout your journey. This ensures you have a designated space, especially during peak travel seasons. Always choose reserved for 1st or 2nd class.
Unreserved Tickets – Not recommended for tourists: Unreserved tickets offer flexibility but you will almost certainly have to stand, especially on the busy Kandy to Gampaha route. This option is only for extreme budget travelers who don't mind discomfort.
Kandy Railway Station (Station Code: KDT) is your departure point. Arrive at least 30-45 minutes early, especially for early morning trains (05:00, 06:20). The station is centrally located and has food kiosks, restrooms, and seating areas. Pack water and a light snack – the journey is 2 hours and there are vendors on board but limited.
Gampaha Bus Stand is approximately 500 m from the railway station – a 5-10 min walk or 2-3 min tuk-tuk ride. Buses run to Colombo, Kandy, Negombo, and Kurunegala regularly.
