It is no secret that Galle is a popular tourist destination, because of the attractions that it has to offer, including the Sea Turtle Farm & Hatchery, Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project, and Galle Dutch Fort. As a result, thousands of tourists visit Galle during their trips because Galle beaches are well known for their quality. Many people consider Galle to be the beginning of their Sri Lanka trip.
There are several ways of getting to Galle from Colombo, but I would recommend that you take the train. It is time-saving and economical. On top of that, in similar fashion to the other coast train trips in Sri Lanka, the Colombo to Galle train ride offers a magnificent view of coastal villages as well as a breathtaking view of the ocean, which is the most breathtaking view.
The increasing number of tourists who travel between Colombo and Galle by train has led to the introduction of tourist carriages on the interstate trains and express trains that now include assigned seats, on-board meals, and free WiFi access for the passengers. Depending on your train and the route that you take, it is possible that it will take you less than 2 hours or over 3 hours to travel from Colombo to Galle by train.
Distance: ~115 km. Approximately 74 weekly trains (10+ daily services).

First class air‑conditioned compartments are available on many express trains including 8050, 8086, 8058, and 8760 (Samudra Devi). Observation saloon on 8050 and 8056 offers panoramic windows for the best views. However, windows are sealed – for open‑air photography, 2nd class is better. Book at least 2‑3 weeks in advance.
Second class is available on all trains. Reserved 2nd class on expresses (8050, 8086, 8056, 8058) offers open windows, comfortable seats, and the best coastal views. Unreserved 2nd class can be crowded – we strongly recommend reserving a seat, especially for weekend travel.
Third class is the cheapest option, but it comes with serious drawbacks. These carriages are extremely overcrowded, often filled with local commuters, leaving little room to relax. Seats are wooden benches, and they are unreserved – you may end up standing for the entire 2‑3 hour journey. We strongly advise tourists to avoid 3rd class altogether. The small saving is not worth the discomfort.
For the fastest journey, take Dakshina Intercity (15:10) – only 1h43m. For the best coastal views and photography, take 8050 (06:50) or 8056 (14:40) with observation saloon. The best ocean views are on the left side (west) of the train for the entire journey.
Reserved Tickets – Guaranteed Seating (RECOMMENDED): Reserved tickets provide a guaranteed seat for this 2‑3 hour journey. Always choose reserved for 1st or 2nd class. Book online 30 days in advance – unreserved tickets often mean standing.
Unreserved Tickets – Not recommended: Unreserved tickets (3rd class) mean you may have to stand or sit on a wooden bench. Only suitable for extreme budget travel.
Colombo Fort station is your departure point. Arrive at least 30-45 minutes early for express trains. The journey is 2-3 hours – pack water and a light snack. Sit on the left side for the best ocean views.
Galle Bus Stand is 500 m from the railway station – 5 min walk or 2 min tuk-tuk. Buses run to Colombo, Matara, Hikkaduwa, and Bentota.
