Second class is available on all eight trains. We strongly recommend reserving a seat for afternoon trains (16:00β18:30) as they can be busy with commuters. Train 9254 (08:30) is the only morning train β a good choice for a daytime trip.
Third class is available on all trains but is unreserved. For a 1.5β2 hour journey, 3rd class is acceptable if you're on a tight budget and travel offβpeak. Avoid 3rd class on Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings when many people travel.
For daytime travel, take 9254 (08:30) β the only morning train. For evening departures, 9262 (16:25) and 9269 (18:30) are reliable. The best views are on the right side (east) as you head away from Colombo, where you'll see rubber plantations and paddy fields along the Kelani River.
Reserved Tickets β Guaranteed Seating (RECOMMENDED): Reserved tickets provide a guaranteed seat for this 1.5β2 hour journey. Always choose reserved 2nd class if travelling during peak commuter hours.
Unreserved Tickets β OK for offβpeak travel: Unreserved tickets (3rd class) mean you may have to stand. Only use for offβpeak travel on a tight budget.
Colombo Fort station is your departure point. Arrive at least 30β45 minutes early, especially for the 08:30 morning train. The station has basic food stalls and restrooms. Pack water and a light snack β the journey is short but vendors can be scarce.
Buses stop on the main Avissawella β Colombo road about 500 m from the station. Buses to Avissawella, Padukka, and Colombo. Tukβtuk to main road costs 150β200 LKR.

Tip: The best time for walking through rubber plantations is December to March (dry season). Avoid the midday heat (12β2 PM).

If you overshoot Angampitiya, the next station is Avissawella (8 km away). From there, take a train back to Angampitiya β services run every 1β2 hours.
If you miss Angampitiya, get off at Avissawella and take the next train back to Colombo. Return journey takes about 2 hours. Alternatively, take a bus from the main road to Colombo (1.5β2 hours).
