Choose Your Class: First, Second, and Third Class

1st Class – Air‑conditioned comfort (Express trains only)

On this route, 1st class air‑conditioned compartments are available on 8050, Rajarata Rejini (8086), Ruhunu Kumari (8058), Sagarika (8096), and Samudra Devi (8760). These trains offer comfortable reclining seats and large windows, perfect for avoiding the tropical heat while still enjoying coastal views. However, windows are sealed, so for photography, 2nd class may be better. Book 1st class at least 1‑2 weeks in advance for weekends.

2nd Class – Best Value (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED)

Second class is available on all trains. Express and long‑distance trains (8050, 8086, 8058, 8096, 8760) offer reserved 2nd class with good legroom and open windows – ideal for ocean views and photos. Commuter trains (8056, 8062, 8764) have both reserved and unreserved 2nd class; we strongly recommend reserving a seat for the 14:25 Galu Kumari and 17:00 8062, as they can get crowded. Night Mail (8775) has only 2nd and 3rd class.

3rd Class – NOT RECOMMENDED during peak hours

Third class is available on most commuter and some express trains. Seats are wooden benches, and carriages can be very busy during evening peak hours (16:00‑19:00). For a journey of 1.5‑2 hours, 3rd class is acceptable if you travel off‑peak (mid‑morning or early afternoon). Avoid 3rd class on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons.

Plan Your Journey Upfront

For the fastest journey (around 1h 30m), take Sagarika (16:46) or Ruhunu Kumari (15:50). For a mix of speed and comfort, Rajarata Rejini (10:30) is excellent. The best ocean views are on the left side of the train (Colombo → Ambalangoda). After Panadura, the tracks run close to the sea – you’ll see fishing villages, palm trees, and sometimes stilt fishermen. Morning trains (06:17, 06:50, 08:35) offer the softest light for photos, while late afternoon trains give you golden sunsets over the Indian Ocean.

Reserved vs Unreserved Ticket

Reserved Tickets – Guaranteed Seating (RECOMMENDED): Reserved tickets provide the advantage of guaranteed seating throughout your journey. This ensures you have a designated space, especially during peak travel seasons. Always choose reserved for 1st or 2nd class.

Unreserved Tickets – Not recommended: Unreserved tickets offer flexibility but you will almost certainly have to stand, especially on weekends. This option is only for extreme budget travelers who don't mind discomfort.

Plan Your Departure from Colombo Fort
