On this route, only Samudra Devi (Train 8760) offers 1st class air‑conditioned compartments. These are comfortable, with reclining seats and large windows. Since the journey is only about 1.5 hours, 1st class is a luxury option for those who want peace and quiet. However, the windows are sealed, so if you want open‑air photography, 2nd class on Samudra Devi is a better choice. Book 1st class at least a week in advance, especially for Friday and Sunday travel.
Second class is available on all trains listed. Galu Kumari (14:40) and Samudra Devi (17:25) are the most popular for tourists due to their convenient afternoon timings. Both offer reserved 2nd class compartments with open windows – perfect for enjoying the ocean breeze and taking photos. Night Mail (19:30) is an option for late travellers, but most of the journey will be in darkness, so you’ll miss the coastal views. We strongly recommend reserving a seat in 2nd class, as unreserved carriages can become crowded, especially on weekends.
Third class is available on Galu Kumari, 8062, 8764a, and Night Mail. Seats are wooden benches, and carriages can be busy during evening commuter hours (16:00–19:00). For a journey of only 1.5 hours, 3rd class is acceptable if you’re on a tight budget. However, avoid 3rd class on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons when locals travel. Upgrade to 2nd reserved for a small extra fee – your comfort will thank you.
To ensure a seamless Colombo to Ahungalle train journey, it is highly recommended to purchase your tickets in advance, especially for First and Second Class. By booking online upfront, you can secure your preferred seats and enjoy a hassle-free experience. For Third Class, we recommend not using it at all.
Reserved Tickets – Guaranteed Seating (RECOMMENDED): Reserved tickets provide the advantage of guaranteed seating throughout your journey. This ensures you have a designated space, especially during peak travel seasons. Always choose reserved for 1st or 2nd class.
Unreserved Tickets – Not recommended for tourists: Unreserved tickets offer flexibility but you will almost certainly have to stand, especially on the busy Colombo to Ahungalle route on weekends. This option is only for extreme budget travelers who don't mind discomfort.
Colombo Fort station is your departure point. Arrive at least 30-45 minutes early for afternoon trains. The station has food kiosks, restrooms, and seating areas. Bring a light jacket if you’re taking the evening Night Mail (19:30), as it can get breezy near the coast.
Ahungalle bus stop is just a 3‑minute walk from the railway station, located on the main Galle Road (A2). Buses run frequently to Galle, Bentota, Hikkaduwa, and Colombo.
